The annual College of Arts and Law (CAL) Masters Dissertation Conference will take place on Thursday 25 June in Law Lecture Theatre 2 at the University of Birmingham, with the option to join online via Zoom. This full-day hybrid conference showcases the breadth and diversity of postgraduate research across the College.

The event provides Masters students with a supportive platform to present their dissertation research, receive feedback, and develop their communication skills. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with a wide range of topics, exchange ideas with peers, and gain insight into current research within CAL.

Staff, students, and members of the University community are warmly invited to attend, either in person or online, to support presenters and learn more about the innovative work being undertaken across the College.

Gain an insight into an Royal Shakespeare Company rehearsal room with RSC practitioner Rachel Gartside to discover how actors bring Shakespeare to life.

In this energetic, hands-on workshop, you’ll explore playful approaches to plot and character, working collaboratively to create a short ensemble performance of a whole play. Rooted in active exploration, this session introduces practical tools for unlocking narrative and character—making Shakespeare dynamic, accessible, and engaging.

You will leave with adaptable strategies that can be applied in classrooms, workshops, or your own creative practice. Expect to be on your feet, thinking like a performer, and reframing Shakespeare in ways that are fresh, collaborative, and inventive!

Whether you sing professionally or for joy, whether your voice is your daily means of expression or the cornerstone of your livelihood, many of us go through our day knowing very little about how our voice works or how to care for it.

Vocal Health Education is a not-for-profit dedicated to high quality education about vocal health and rehabilitation. On behalf of Vocal Health Education, Michael Mandalios presents this workshop exclusively for UoB students to provide tools for strengthening voice function, developing resonance and articulation, understanding the fundamentals of vocal anatomy, and building a range of skills for preventing hoarseness, fatigue, and loss of voice function.

You'll learn about how your voice works, what can go wrong, and what you can do if and when it does. The practical component of the workshop will involve developing proprioceptive skills for breath, alignment and making sound, as well as strengthening, releasing and conditioning exercises for vocal power and agility. We'll also make time for questions and myth-busting, to answer the age-old questions about milk, caffeine, £100 lozenges, weightlifting, and more!

This session is open to all students, whether you sing as part of your studies or for your own enjoyment.

This workshop will cover CPR, use of a defibrillator, what to do if someone is choking and more.

This introductory three-hour certificated session raises awareness of young people’s mental health, delivered by a licenced MHFA England Trainer.

It covers some of the common mental health issues affecting young people, including depression, anxiety, eating disorders and psychosis. You will be equipped with skills to work more effectively with young people living with mental health issues, as well as learn ways to support young people with a mental health issue and relate to their experiences. Learning takes place through a mix of presentations, group discussions and workshop activities.

When you complete the session, you will get a certificate to say you are Youth Mental Health Aware, accredited by Mental Health First Aid England.

This engaging and practical session introduces students to the basics of British Sign Language (BSL) and Deaf awareness within healthcare environments.

Students will learn useful introductory signs, explore common communication barriers faced by Deaf patients, and develop a greater understanding of Deaf culture and accessibility within healthcare settings. The session will also look at practical strategies for improving communication confidence and creating more inclusive patient experiences.

No previous experience of BSL is required. The session is designed to be interactive, supportive, and discussion-based, with opportunities to practise signing throughout.

The training is delivered by Sign Together UK, a Deaf-led and lived-experience-informed British Sign Language training provider and Signature Accredited Centre working with organisations, universities, healthcare professionals, and public services across the UK.

This workshop is open to all, but is specifically designed for those who are aiming for careers in clinical healthcare settings.

The session will run 11:00-14:30, with 30 minutes of break within the session.

The annual Summer Festival of Music is a highlight of the academic year for musicians at the University of Birmingham and, this year, University Music is delighted to announce a multi-week period of events at the end of the semester for students, staff, and members of the wider community.
