Explore key figures from the history of classics teaching at the University of Birmingham, with our expert panel. Discover the stories of:

  • E. A. Sonnenschein (1851-1929), the first Professor of Classics at the University and a founder of the Classical Association, as shared by Dr Christopher Stray
  • Louis MacNeice (1907-1963), Irish poet, playwright, and BBC producer, as shared by Professor Stephen Harrison
  • E. R. Dodds (1893-1979), best known for discussion of the Greeks and the 'irrational', as shared by Professort Judith Mossman
  • George Thomson (1903-1987), the scholar who pioneered a Marxist interpretation of Greek drama, as shared by Dr Henry Stead
