Programme of talks

Our distinguished lectures include:

'The Attentive Brain' with Professor George (Ron) Mangun

The way we pay attention to events around us shapes our perception of the world. Attention is a cognitive process influenced by both our behavioral goals and immediate needs. Cognitive neuroscience research has uncovered many of the fundamental brain mechanisms underlying attention and demonstrated how attention shapes our experiences. This presentation will review what we know about the brain's attention systems.

'Revisiting Stuart Hall’s Drifting into a Law-and-Order Society in the 21st Century' with Dr Shaun Gabbidon, Distinguished Chair

This presentation revisits Stuart Hall’s 1979 Cobden Trust Human Rights Day Lecture, which was published by the Foundation the next year (see Hall, 1980). While a neglected scholar in American criminology, this presentation demonstrates the relevancy of Hall’s criminological work in the 21st Century.

'A Visual Language for STEM' with Dr Gökhan Ersan, Fulbright Scholar

A graphic designer's journey with educators and researchers in search of a visual language for STEM. Telling graphical stories of phenomena that happen at the extreme scales of time and space.

'Conceptual Metaphor and the Elegy' with Eva Rothenberg, Marshall Scholar

This presentation considers Alfred Tennyson’s elegy In Memoriam, A. H. H. through the lens of conceptual metaphor theory, and explores how metaphors of bereavement manifest at the intersection of personal grief and public mourning.
